Sanitation drive for Pongala

Drive to be led by 20 health inspectors

Kudumbasree to remove bricks used for hearths


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city Corporation has finalised arrangements to ensure proper sanitation in the area around Attukal Bhagavathy Temple during the Pongala festival. As many as 2,200 sanitation workers, including temporary hands, would be deployed to clean up the festival zone.

Corporation secretary Johnson K. George said here on Tuesday that the activities would be led by 20 health inspectors and 36 junior health inspectors. Workers of the Kudumbasree Mission have been given the task of removing bricks from the roadsides after the Pongala offering is made on Friday.

The Corporation will provide 35 garbage trucks to clear the waste. A mobile phone network linking sanitation teams and drivers of garbage trucks would be established to streamline operations. The roads will also be swept and washed clean after the Pongala.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu, chairman of the Health Standing Committee G.R. Anil, Corporation secretary and health officer D. Sreekumar, will supervise the operations on Friday. The Corporation will also supply 50 tanks to provide drinking water to the devotees. Tanks will be set up at select locations. Health squads have been set up to carry out inspections in hotels and eateries. The squads will also take action against traders selling un-burnt bricks and plastic covers below 30 microns.

Holiday

Meanwhile, the Collector has declared a holiday for all government offices and educational institutions in the district on February 22 on account of Pongala.
