“Over 2 lakh families given jobs in Tiruvannamalai”

TIRUVANNAMALAI: A total of 2,78,634 families were provided employment out of 2,92,200 families which had registered under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in Tiruvannamalai district, according to the Collector Satyabrata Sahoo.

Presiding over the administrative committee meeting of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) here on Wednesday, Mr. Sahoo, who is also chairman of the DRDA, said that while Rs.135.69 crore had been received for the scheme, a total of 2,484 works had been approved at the cost of Rs.66.63 crore. They included formation of 401 new tanks and ponds, formation of 524 minor irrigation channels, renovation of 1,385 old tanks, ponds and canals, formation of drainage canals and formation of 174 rural mud roads. The workers had been paid a total wage of Rs.102.85 lakh. The Collector said that against a target of 2,924 free group houses fixed for construction at the cost of Rs.10.69 lakh under the Indira Awas Yojana during 2007-08, the construction of 954 houses have been completed.

Against a target of construction of 645 kutcha houses at the total cost of Rs.80.37 lakh (at the rate of Rs.12,500 each), 569 houses have been constructed.

The DRDA administrative committee discussed the target, allocation and expenditure under various schemes such as MPs Local Area Development Scheme, Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) schemes, Namakku Naame Thittam, panchayat union works, the scheme of raising of jatropha saplings, Drought Prone Areas Development Programme, Integrated Wasteland Development Programme, Total Sanitation Project and Swarnajayanthi Gramin Swarozgar Yojana.
