KATHMANDU: Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala will not contest the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) election; instead, he will be nominated by his party in the Assembly under the proportional system. This was disclosed when the Nepali Congress, along with two dozen other parties, submitted its “close list” of candidates to be elected through the proportional system. According to the election law, 240 members will be elected to the Constituent Assembly through first-past-the-post system and the parties will nominate 335 others in proportion to the popular votes garnered by them. The rest 26 in the 601-member Constituent Assembly will be nominated by the Prime Minister. The United Democratic Madheshi Front, a coalition of three regional parties, did not submit the list though the deadline for it ended on Wednesday.
