KOLKATA: Unseeded Vivek Shokeen of India came good with powerful service and sharp returns to down fifth-seeded Peng Sun of China 7-5, 6-3 in the pre-quarterfinals of the Coal India ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament here on Wednesday. Unseasonal showers in the afternoon forced suspension of some matches. The matches will be played on Thursday. Shokeen’s service game, packed with 10 aces, never allowed Sun to settle down in the match. The Indian broke the Chinese twice while allowing only one break to ensure the first set. Shokeen was even more frugal in the second set as he worked his way through breaking Sun in the fourth game. The results: Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Alexander Satschko (Ger) bt Simeon Ivanov (Bul) 6-1, 6-3. Vivek Shokeen (Ind) bt Peng Sun (Chn) 7-5, 6-3; Tsung-Hua Yang (Tpe) bt Vishnu Vardhan (Ind) 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1; David Savic (Srb) bt Hsein-Yin Peng (Tpe) 6-2, 6-0; V.M. Ranjeet (Ind) bt Rohan Gide (Ind) 7-6(4), 6-0.
