Liverpool, AS Roma, Schalke post wins

Chelsea held to a draw by Olympiakos

LONDON: Liverpool, AS Roma and Schalke each made good use of home-field advantage on Tuesday, winning their matches in the first leg of the Champions League football’s second round. Chelsea, however, was held to a 0-0 draw at Olympiakos.

Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard scored late goals to give Liverpool a 2-0 win over 10-man Inter Milan, while Roma downed Real Madrid 2-1 and Schalke defeated FC Porto 1-0.

Inter played with 10 men for 60 minutes after Marco Materazzi was sent off for two yellow cards, but it took until the 85th for Kuyt to score with a volley. Gerrard made it 2-0 in the 90th with a long-ranger that went underneath Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Liverpool substitute Jermaine Pennant set up both goals.

Materazzi looked at referee Frank de Bleeckere in astonishment after he received his second yellow card for pulling Liverpool striker Fernando Torres back by the shoulder. He had also brought down the Spaniard in the 12th minute.

Madrid still hasn’t won away from home in the Champions League this season, and the nine-time winner let a 1-0 lead slip in Rome.

Raul scores

The Spanish team went ahead in the eighth minute when Raul Gonzalez scored his 60th goal in the Champions League.

David Pizarro levelled in the 24th and Brazilian midfielder Amantini Mancini scored the winner in the 58th minute off a pass from Roma captain Francesco Totti. Madrid had won each of its three previous games against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico — the last two by three-goal margins. Roma, meanwhile, hasn’t lost a home game in Europe since falling to Madrid on December 8, 2004, in a match played without fans. Since then, Roma has compiled 10 wins and four draws at the Stadio Olimpico.

Chelsea hadn’t conceded a goal in its four previous Champions League games, but this time it couldn’t score.

Three of the return legs are scheduled for March 5, with Inter hosting Liverpool on March 11.

The results: AS Roma 2 (Pizarro 24, Mancini 58) bt Real Madrid 1 (Raul 8). Liverpool 2 (Kuyt 85, Gerrard 90) bt Inter Milan 0. Schalke 04 1 (Kuranyi 4) bt FC Porto 0. Olympiakos 0 drew with Chelsea 0. — Agencies
