CHENNAI: In addition to very good business and political ties, the avenues for academic cooperation are increasing for India and Germany, said Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Germany Roland Herrmann.

He was speaking at the ‘Indo-German Academic Summit 2008’ organised by the German Academic Exchange Service in association with the Consulate-General of the Federal Republic of Germany. Mr. Herrmann said visits of delegations from German Universities and the interaction their vice-chancellors had with universities here revealed that there is a tremendous amount of interest in strengthening academic ties.

Head of Division Communications and Marketing, German Academic Exchange Service, Christian Muller, said German universities currently had about 4,000 Indian students. The German Federal Government had identified key areas of research and along with the state governments funded several research initiatives, he said.

Professor at the University of Leipzig Evamaria Hey-Hawkins, in her presentation, said the university offered scope for specialised research in three key areas of research — natural sciences, life sciences and humanities. She said there were far too many students in India who wanted to study biotechnology and urged professors here to divert them to fields such as materials which are bound to offer several opportunities in the coming years.

The team earlier visited five other cities such as New Delhi, Chandigarh, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
