Brisk polling for byelections

For 11 posts in local bodies in Virudhunagar

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Brisk polling was reported for the byelections held to fill 11 posts in various local bodies in the district on Wednesday. While 68 per cent turnout was reported for the bypoll in urban areas, in was 65 per cent in rural areas.
Polling went off peacefully, according to the police.
Out of the total 1,825 voters, 1,233 exercised their franchise to elect the councillor of ward 1 of the Rajapalayam municipality.
The turnout in election to ward 4 of Narikudi panchayat union was 65 per cent and to the lone post of president of Ramanujapuram panchayat in Aruppukottai panchayat union was 89 per cent.
Among the eight posts to elect ward member of panchayats, Nallanchettipatti recorded the highest turnout of 80 per cent and Alagiyanallur in Kariyapatti the lowest (47 per cent).
Other panchayats where the election was held to fill vacancies of ward members were Sundarajapuram, Karisalkulam, Maharajapuram, Alangulam, Anaikulam and Tiruchuzhi.
