Awareness meet held for elected representatives Arrangements being made in a big way KHAMMAM: About 1,000 prospective couples are expected to be united in wedlock as part of the TTD sponsored ‘Kalyanamastu’ free marriages initiative in Khammam district scheduled for March 9. Some 1000 elected representatives – sarpanches, MPTC and ZPTCs were involved in motivating the youths who intend to get married this year, to get registered under the Kalyanamastu well in advance. The registration process has already commenced at all important temples and the mandal revenue offices in the district, according to John Wesley, in-charge of the programme and the district panchayat officer. TTD campaignHe said an awareness programme was organised for all the gram panchayat sarpanches and other elected representatives and some 600 of them took part in the meet. Every sarpanch was asked to motivate at least one couple. He said the programme was meant for all sections of people. The bride and bride groom propose to get married under the Kalyanamathi should fulfill the norms laid down for the purpose. The TTD had already taken up a campaign in the villages for making the programme a success. The feedback on the registrations was quite encouraging. A good number of families have approached the officials concerned for performing the marriages of their sons or daughters. The poorer sections could save on the marriage expenditure as the TTD would provide the Mangalasutrams, clothes and materials for the marriage rituals free of cost. Above all muhurtham of ‘Uttara Bhadra nakstaram” decided by the Veda pandits for performing the marriages was all auspicious. The programme had a good response in the district last time. In all 565 prospective couples from the 770 gram panchayats in the district got married as part of the Kalyanamasu programme in the district last time and the number was the second highest (after Anantapur). Arangements were on for the Kalyanamastu programme in a big way here, he added.
