Berhampur University exams postponed

BERHAMPUR: Classes were boycotted and the ongoing examinations of Berhampur University were postponed following an agitation on the campus by students on Wednesday.

They were demanding the release of a student Laxmidutta Pradhan and action against a policeman who allegedly arrested him from the university hostel.

Led by president of the students’ union of the university Jhasaketan Padhi and secretary Purna Chandra Das, the agitating students boycotted classes and staged a demonstration in front of the administrative block.

The discipline and grievance committee of the university had to sit for an emergency meeting to discuss the issue.

It tried to pacify the students but could not succeed as no decision could be taken in the absence of the Vice-Chancellor.

Post-Graduate Council Chairman of the university Bauribandhu Kar said they had to postpone the examinations scheduled for Thursday till further orders.

Mr. Padhi alleged that a police inspector tried to frame false charges against the arrested student. He was also taken away from the university hostel without obtaining permission from the authorities concerned.

The disciplinary committee found that the arrested youth was innocent, he said.
