BERHAMPUR: The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of a cellphone has helped in nabbing two persons who are accused of relieving a trader from Andhra Pradesh of Rs. 5 lakhs cash and injuring him in the city last month. On January 21, K. Golababu, a trader of a popular brand of ‘desi ghee’, was attacked and injured by two armed persons near Berhampur railway station at midnight. They then relieved him of the cash, snatched his cellphone and made good their escape. Later, they removed the SIM card to avoid arrest not knowing that the IMEI was also traceable. They then started using the stolen cellphone with new SIM cards. Officer in-charge of the Gosaninuagaon police station Jyotiranjan Samantray said that the due first escaped to Mumbai and then returned to Orissa. Signals from IMEI showed that they were at a place near Talcher under the Bikrampur police station limits. A police team reached the area and arrested them. More than Rs. 2 lakhs cash was seized from their possession. They were identified as Rabi Sahu and Tukuna Raut of Laxminrusimha Street in the city.
