Collectors’ assurance to dalits

UDUMALPET: Coimbatore district Collector Neeraj Mittal on Wednesday assured dalits of Salarappatty of jobs in rural development works, including under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, in the village.

All the 100-odd families are landless labourers who have been depending on caste Hindus for farm works. Elderly women complained that they could not survive if the discrimination continued and several families had taken shelter in their relatives’ homes.

Mr. Mittal, who visited the village, said full protection would be given to the children to attend classes. The Collector appealed to the people to remain calm and maintain peace.

Stating that the community hall is the public property, Mr. Mittal said efforts would be taken to end discrimination there.
