JAIPUR: More than a dozen persons were injured, two of them seriously, in a clash between two sects of Muslims at a mosque in Amritpuri locality adjacent to the Walled City here on Wednesday following an altercation over an “Ijtema” (congregation) organised by the Tablighi Jamat recently. Members of the Barevli and Deobandi sects had heated exchanges after the Zuhar (afternoon) prayers in the Noorani Masjid in Amritpuri over the Ijtema at Jamia Hidayat here early this week that was attended by thousands of people from all over the country. Barelvis reportedly objected to Tablighi Jamat’s sermons at the congregation. Muslims who had gathered in the mosque for prayers spilled over to roads and hurled stones at each other. Stones were also pelted on the crowd from the roofs of nearby houses and two motorcycles and a few kiosks were torched. The Superintendent of Police (Jaipur East), V.K. Singh, said those injured were rushed to Sawai Man Singh Hospital, where three persons were admitted and others discharged after primary medical aid. An unspecified number of persons from both the sides have been rounded up, though no formal case was registered till late evening. Congress MLA Mohammed Mahir Azad, who met the injured at the hospital, said the clash was “unwarranted.”
