Bangalore: Bangalore will host an international language fair organised by the Department of Foreign Languages, Bangalore University, on February 23. It is aimed at ensuring that more students avail themselves of the opportunity and learn foreign languages, Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath told presspersons here on Tuesday. The department now offered regular and executive programmes at three levels (certificate, diploma and higher diploma) in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. It would introduce Chinese and Portuguese in the next academic year, he said. K. Eresi, chairman of the department, said learning of foreign languages was integrated in international business and tourism courses. “Students of these courses have to take up foreign languages compulsorily.” The department planned to introduce 10 different languages and become a Centre of Global Languages by 2010. “It will introduce Russian. We are conducting a survey with regard to another language which can be introduced along with Russian.” Dr. Eresi said the department had signed a memorandum of understanding with Toyota Kirloskar, which is supporting its Japanese programme. “We have also started the process with regard to German. We are in touch with German companies such as Bosch and Siemens.”
