PANAJI: Atanasio Monserrate, former Minister and unattached MLA from Taleigao in north Goa, was remanded to police custody for seven days while his wife Jennifer Monserrate was remanded to seven days of judicial custody by the First Class Judicial Magistrate here on Wednesday following their arrests in the violent mob attack on the Panaji police station on Tuesday night. Police have registered FIRs against 524 people including 24 known persons and the search was on for the accused allegedly involved in the attack. . Earlier, the Goa police filed a case of attempt to murder and charged Mr. Monserrate, his wife and six of his supporters, with inciting violence. They were detained by the police on Tuesday night along with Panaji Mayor Tony Rodrigues. Around 32 policemen were injured, six of them seriously, while a couple of two-wheelers in front of the police station were burnt in the attack on the town police station by an unruly mob on Tuesday night. It was allegedly provoked by the MLA, according to Director-General of Police B.S. Brar. The supporters of the MLAs, on the other hand, made counter claims of brutal police attack on them, unjustified arrest of Monserrate’s minor son from his residence and damage to the property of the MLA by police on rampage. The village of Taleigao on the outskirts of the city continued to be tense but peaceful on Wednesday with supporters of the MLA forcing a bandh on shops and establishments for the second day. Police patrolling had been intensified in Taleigao as also in the city. Of the six supporters arrested and produced before the magistrate along with Mr. Monserrate, four have been remanded to police custody while two were remanded to judicial custody. Apart from Mr. Monserrate, the Police had also detained his wife Jennifer and son Amit. The DGP said on Wednesday that a mob of over 700, led by Monserrate, gathered at the police station after two rival gangs clashed on Tuesday.
