KOCHI: With Kerala finishing runner-up in the South Zone under-25 cricket championship in Goa early this week, some of the players who did well in the event will be hoping to find a place in the State senior team for the Subbaiah Pillai South Zone limited-over cricket championship which begins in Chennai on February 27. The State camp is on at the Fort Ground in Palakkad and the probables will play two selection matches, on Thursday and Friday, before the Kerala team is finalised. “Our boys did very well in Goa and we finished runner-up for the first time in the under-25 championship,” said the Kerala Cricket Association secretary T.C. Mathew on Wednesday evening. “Some of the boys like K.J. Rakesh, Prasanth Parameswaran, Vineeth Viswanath, Arun Paulose, who hit a century (against Tamil Nadu), and Krishna Chandran (the medium-pacer was the team’s highest wicket-taker with 12 wickets which included a five-wicket haul against Hyderabad, including a hat-trick) were outstanding.” Sony Cheruvathur, who led Kerala in the Ranji Trophy Plate League, will be the captain for the Subbaiah Pillai Trophy too, said Mr. Mathew. The team will be announced on Friday and will leave for Chennai the next day. — Principal Correspondent
