ARIYALUR: Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board is on course to complete the Rs. 44.12-crore Combined Drinking Water Scheme covering 525 habitations in Ariyalur and Perambalur districts by May, a month ahead of schedule. Under the scheme, drinking water will be provided from the sourcing point at Thitumalaipady in the Coleroon river to 382 habitations in Ariyalur, Tirumanur and Senthurai panchayat unions in Ariyalur districts and 143 habitations in Veppur and Alathur panchayat unions in Perambalur District. Reviewing the progress of the work, Ariyalur Collector Xavier Chrisso Nayagam said that 70 per cent of the work involving the laying of 735-km-long pipelines had been completed. The scheme, for which the work started in June 2006, would ensure drinking water from the Coleroon to 3.33 lakh people. Sumps have been constructed in 52 places and booster collection points are at Keelapazhur, Kollapuram, Rajapuram, Senthurai and Veppur. People had been depending on borewells for drinking water. According to TWAD Board Executive Engineer A. Pakkiri, the per capita cost of the scheme is Rs. 984. A proposal has been sent to the Government for undertaking a similar project at Jayankondam at a cost of Rs. 19.61 crore to cover 281 habitations.
