He told presspersons here on Wednesday that the district has received Rs. 12.25 crore for doing the works. A sum of Rs. 8.86 crores has been released to 353 panchayats and works had been taken up under the scheme now. The plan is to take up 489 works in all the 430 panchayats under the scheme. Works have so far been given to 44,238 persons and a sum of Rs. 2.25 crore has been given as wages to them.

A total of 3,16,737 persons have applied for identity cards to take up works in the district. Out of them, 2,90,073 have received identity cards. New persons can also register their names for getting works. Identity cards will be issued after assessing their eligibility, the Collector said.

A sum of Rs. 80 each to both men and women is given for a day’s work. The wages are paid every week on Tuesday, Chandrasekaran said.

“Now road works and digging of ponds are taken up. During summer, desilting works will also be taken up. The works were delayed as people were busy with samba paddy harvest and due to rain. Now works have been taken up and people are given jobs,” Chandrasekaran said.

Seventy four technical assistants have been appointed to implement the works. Besides these assistants, 21 computer assistants have been appointed and ten Deputy Block Development officers have been allotted.
