Tells municipality to cancel bicycle parking lease at Karur Bus Stand

KARUR: The Assembly Assurances Committee took to task the authorities of Karur Municipality and Government Hospital here for various lapses in services.

Panel Chairman T. Velmurugan (PMK) upbraided the medical officers at the GH for not providing even the basic requirements such as good beds, pillows and drinking water for the patients and visitors, while he directed the Karur Municipality to cancel the lease for bicycle stand at the bus stand as he detected excess collection of parking fee. The committee comprising his party colleague K.L. Ilavazhagan, A. Soundarapandian (DMK) and Rani Venkatesan (Congress) was on a visit to Karur when the issues cropped up during inspection.

The committee members visited Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) Kagithapuram paper mill and saw for themselves the developments taking place there.

Officials led by Deputy Managing Director A. Velliangiri briefed the team about the developments.

When confronted with the pollution issue, TNPL officials claimed that with the implementation of a Rs. 525-crore Mill Development Plan, pollution would be greatly reduced.

The team members moved to Government Adi Dravidar High School, Punnam and inspected the Primary Health Centre, Govindampalayam, where they recommended improvements of infrastructure.

The committee members inspected the Karur Bus Stand when disparities in bicycle stand, non-availability of first aid boxes in certain buses and other irregularities came to light.

Finding that the contractor was indulging in malpractices, Mr. Velmurugan directed the Municipality Commissioner to take steps to cancel the lease.

The team inspected the Government Hospital here when more inadequacies came to light.

They severely took to task the medical officers for failing to provide decent amenities to the patients and the visitors.

The committee members then held a review meeting with the district officials later in the evening.
