Chennai Cheshire Home turns 50
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Saturday will launch the anniversary events of Chennai Cheshire Home by offering his painting. It will be auctioned at a fundraising event scheduled for September.
Cheshire Home that has been working to rehabilitate persons with disability will celebrate its golden jubilee this year.
The home, started here in December 1958 by Leonard Cheshire and Mary Clubwalla, has helped nurture care for physically challenged and persons with multiple disabilities.
The home, with A.C. Muthiah as the current chairman of the managing committee, has a staff of 20 persons, including social workers, matrons and teachers. Currently 36 children from the home are studying in mainstream schools or schools for special children. The home has an occupational therapy centre where the inmates are trained in making corrugated boxes and at the plastic injection moulding unit. The efforts have helped fetch more income to the institution, according to a release.
