BANGALORE: In yet another case of murder for gain, a housewife was strangled and robbed of gold jewellery estimated at Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 9,000 cash at her house in Mahalakshmi Layout police station limits on Tuesday. The police gave her name as Geetha (32), mother of two, and a resident of 22nd Main Road, J.C. Nagar. Her husband Subramani works as a supervisor in a garments factory in Kamakshipalya. He had married Geetha, who was his colleague, 12 years ago. The assailants had smothered Geetha with a pillow and strangled her with the cable of an electric iron. They had relieved her of a pair of gold bangles and a chain she was wearing and made away with another gold chain and Rs. 9,000 cash that were in a safe.Before fleeing, they had locked the main door of the house from outside. The murder suspected to have taken place before 11.30 a.m. came to light around 10 p.m., the police said. Geetha’s two children, Vignesh and Rajeshwari, returned home from school around 2.30 p.m. and found that the door was locked. Assuming that their mother had gone out, the two children started playing with other children in the neighbourhood. Around 4.30 p.m. Vignesh and Rajeshwari went to their grandmother’s house situated on 13th Main, J.C. Nagar. Subramani, who had been to work, had called his wife on her mobile phone thrice at 11.30 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. As there was no response from her, Subramani came home around 8.45 p.m. and informed Geetha’s brother Manjunath. The two entered the house by breaking open the rear door and found Geetha lying dead on a cot in the bedroom. Subsequently, the police were informed. The police have formed two teams to trace the assailants. The Mahalakshmi Layout police have registered a case. Chain snatchedOn the pretext of enquiring an address, a youth snatched a gold chain estimated at Rs. 40,000 from a woman in Jnana Bharathi police station limits on Tuesday. The police said that around 4.30 p.m., a man aged around 25, snatched the chain from Shantha near her house in Vinayaka Layout in Nagarabavi. The Jnana Bharathi police have registered a case. Killed in accidentJ. Sunil Kumar (28) was killed after a van rammed his motorcycle on Koramangala Inner Ring Road around 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Ulsoor traffic police, who have registered a case, said Kumar was a resident of Marathahalli. He was working as a sales executive in a car showroom. Cricket bettingThe South Division police on Tuesday arrested five persons who were allegedly taking bets on the ODI cricket match that was played between India and Sri Lanka in Australia. The police said that on a tip off, they arrested the five while were taking bets at a pavement on K.R. Road and seized stake money of Rs. 49,000 from them. The police gave their names as Niraj Jain, Mittal Kumar Jain, Ankith Jain, Praveen Shah and Abdul Rizwan. RecoveredThe Devarajeevanahalli police have arrested Imtiyaz alias Shahrukh Khan (32) on charge of burglary and recovered gold and silver ornaments and electronic goods, all estimated at Rs. 5.50 lakh. The police said Imtiyaz, a resident of Devarajeevanahalli, had burgled seven houses in Commercial Street, Bharathinagar, Kadugondanahalli and Devarajeevanahalli police station limits. In another case, the Central police have arrested Christraj (22) of Vijayanagar on charge of theft and recovered sanitary fittings estimated at Rs. 2.90 lakh.
