MLAs to inspect hostel buildings for renovation

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Legislators and Members of Legislative Council will inspect buildings housing government-run hostels for SCs, STs, BCs and minorities in their respective constituencies on March 1 and 2 to identify repairs and renovations. The government has decided to take up renovation of works in the hostels in a big way with an expenditure of Rs. 32.5 crore. The works will be completed by the commencement of the next academic year, Social Welfare Minister P. Subhashchandra Bose informed the Legislative Council during question hour on Wednesday. He said the government proposed to construct a toilet for every ten students, augment drinking water supply, improve lighting and repair doors and windows with the budget available. The works would conform to standards. Only women would be appointed as matrons for girls’ hostels, he added.

Answering another question, Mr. Bose denied that there was a proposal to have a common directorate for the AP Residential Education Institutions Society, Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare Residential Education Institutions Societies.

Based on the representation of teachers’ unions of these societies, he said a common society was contemplated for the three categories of schools for the convenience of academic programmes, infrastructure, procurement of material and recruitment and training of personnel. The rule of reservation in admissions and recruitment would not be disturbed, he assured.

Rural Development Minister G. Chinna Reddy told the House that the social audit of works taken up under National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme in 13 districts where it was implemented in the first phase disclosed misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs. 1.5 crore. A sum of Rs. 1.02 crore was recovered out of it. Action was initiated against 1,278 officials involved. Law Minister R. Chenga Reddy turned down a demand from TDP for a resolution by the House seeking a Supreme Court bench in Hyderabad and High Court benches in Rayalaseema and a coastal district. He said the demand was not a case for legislature to step in as it was concerned with judiciary.
