BANGALORE: Hemavathy alias Hemalatha, 28, a resident of Chintamani, who was nine months pregnant, died at the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, around 6 p.m. here on Wednesday. Her family and relatives, who accused the hospital of negligence, ransacked the hospital and the labour ward and attacked the doctors and nurses on duty. An eyewitness to the incident told The Hindu that the mob comprised the kin and relatives of the victim from Fraser Town. They had assembled upon hearing about her death. The police sources from the Bowring Hospital outpost said the mob outrage occurred around 8 p.m. and several window panes and some furniture were broken. The hospital has registered a case with the police for damage of property and assault on its staff. Casualty Medical Officer on duty Venkatarajamma P.R. said that the woman had been admitted at 5 p.m. and it was her first visit to the hospital. ‘Misinformation’“She fell down from the bed and before proper attention could be given, her relatives attacked the doctors and created confusion in the labour ward,” she said. She attributed the mob outrage to misinformation spread by the relatives of another patient who had been admitted at the hospital for the past five days.
