MDMK plea to Governor
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Wednesday urged Governor Surjit Singh Barnala to take appropriate measures “to ensure protection of fundamental rights, particularly freedom of expression, in the State.”
Talking to newspersons after submitting a memorandum, Mr. Vaiko alleged that ruling party workers were taking the law into their hands and were preventing opposition parties from holding public meetings.
Recently, MDMK propaganda secretary Nanjil Sampath was attacked with deadly weapons when he was addressing a public meeting at Kulithalai.
Mr. Sampath and scores of MDMK party workers were injured.
Though the local police registered cases, no follow-up action was taken.
Protesting the attack and demanding immediate action against the culprits, Mr. Vaiko said he would address a public meeting at the same venue on February 28.
In his memorandum, Mr. Vaiko alleged that Mr. Sampath was consistently prevented from addressing meetings by ruling party workers with the connivance of the police. He wanted the Governor to take up the issue with the police and render justice.
Mr. Vaiko said the Governor, who gave a patient hearing, agreed to ascertain facts from the Director General of Police.
