State has emerged a role model: YSR

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy proposed to constitute a statutory authority/commission to determine the backwardness of a region or a district in the State for allocating special funds for their development.

Resuming his marathon though unfinished reply to the debate on the Governor’s address in the Assembly for the second day on Wednesday, Dr. Reddy said the commission would prepare the data annually indicating the relative development status of each region and district and recommend allocation of special funds on the lines of the Finance Commission at national level.

With the entire House hearing him in rapt attention, the Chief Minister enjoyed a smooth-sailing and made an hour long speech, outlining various aspects of his governance. Trouble, however, broke out in the end when he and the leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu were engaged in slanging matches over the housing programme for the weaker sections forcing Deputy Speaker, G. Kutuhalamma, abruptly adjourn the House for the day.

Dr Reddy said his Government was able to achieve higher economic growth merely by correcting the mistakes committed during Telugu Desam regime. The Chief Minister said his policies could attract a huge investment of Rs. 1.79 lakh crore in contrast to selling away of even healthy cooperative sugar factories during the Telugu Desam period. Dr. Reddy claimed that AP emerged as a role-model to other states in tackling naxalism. Adopted the “right approach” of treating extremism as a law and order and socio-economic problem, the Government identified idle youths in villages and trained for jobs, while continuing the police action. “The situation is fully under control” except for isolated incidents resorted by the extremists to regain their lost identity,” he said.
