DUBAI: New Delhi has fixed dirham 1,000 (approximately Rs. 11,879) as the revised minimum wage for Indian housemaids seeking employment in the United Arab Emirates. Setting new conditions for recruitment of housemaids or foreign household service workers, the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi announced on Wednesday that individuals seeking to employ housemaids should themselves earn a monthly salary of dirham 10,000. The employer recruiting directly from India must furnish a security deposit of dirham 9,200 with the Indian mission. It will be reimbursed at the time of termination of the contract by mutual consent. However, should the employee complain of non-receipt of dues or if the embassy or consulate incurs expenditure on her accommodation, food, local transportation and airfare to India, these expenses will be deducted from the security deposit and the balance refunded to the employer. Security deposit will not be required if the recruitment is made through a Registered Recruiting Agent in India. Personal guaranteeThe employer must approach the nearest Indian embassy or consulate, accompanied by an Indian national of good standing who will personally guarantee his character and social standing. The housemaid proposed to be recruited should not be less than 30 years of age at the time of issue of the employment visa. She will have to be provided with a mobile phone on her arrival in the UAE. Within two weeks thereafter, the employer and the housemaid must personally visit the Indian embassy. Takes immediate effectThe mission will register details of the housemaid, including her mobile phone number and address. These requirements, coming into effect immediately, will also apply to applications submitted to the embassy or consulate earlier, in case the employee has not yet left for the UAE.
