Haase eliminates Murray

Bhupathi-Knowles pair advances

ROTTERDAM: Dutch wildcard Robin Haase brought the victory celebrations to an end for Andy Murray, knocking the Scot 7-5, 6-3 out in the first round of the ABN Amro Open on Wednesday.

The loss just three days after Murray won his second title of the season at Marseille, left the Scot with a pair of trophies and as many first-round exits this roller-coaster season.

Kuznetsova advances

At Doha, Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Nathalie Dechy 7-5, 7-5 to move into the third round of the Qatar Open on Wednesday.

Blake breezes through

At San Jose, second seed James Blake breezed past fellow American Sam Warburg 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round of the SAP Open on Tuesday.

The ninth-ranked player in the world bounced back and made short work of Warburg, dispatching him in 55 minutes. Blake advances to face fellow American Jesse Levine in the next round. Blake is trying to erase memories of Sunday’s shocking loss to Japanese teen Kei Nishikori in the final of the Delray Beach tournament.

In doubles action, Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles got off to a smooth start, beating the Czech duo of Jaroslav Levinsky and Radek Stepanek 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday.

Rohan Bopanna is partnering Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi at the tournament.

Meek surrender

India’s second best woman player Sunitha Rao surrendered meekly to seventh seed Edina Gallovits to bow out of the Copa Colsanitas WTA tour event in Bogota, Colombia. The Indian lost 1-6, 2-6 to her Romanian opponent.
