Chennai: The growing popularity of the annual inter-collegiate sports festival organised by St. Joseph’s College of Engineering cannot be better exemplified than by the enhanced number of participants each year since 2003. Projected as JETS, the sixth edition of the mega-festival is all set to kick-off on February 22 and conclude on February 24. Around 5,000 students from 75 colleges and institutions from all over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to take part in the three-day competitions which consist of basketball, volleyball, chess, table tennis, tennis, badminton, ball badminton, kabaddi and football for men and basketball, volleyball, chess, table tennis, tennis, badminton, ball badminton and kabaddi for women. Over 32 engineering colleges and 35 arts and science colleges, along with six universities in the State, will figure in the events. The cash prizes will be around Rs. 2 lakh for the winners of various disciplines. All the competitors will be held at the St. Joseph’s College premises and there is no entry fee for the teams. Football has attracted the maximum number of entries (40), followed by basketball at 36. Dr. Babu Manoharan, Director, St. Joseph’s College, said that competition this time would be tough in every discipline than in the previous years following the decision to allow participation of arts and science colleges in the State. He added that by the time of draw on Friday, the number of colleges in the fray could exceed 85.
