Sudhakaran refutes criticism

Cooperatives mobilised Rs.15,000 crore as deposits

10,000 cooperative markets organised in the State

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Cooperation, Coir and Devaswoms G. Sudhakaran on Tuesday refuted Opposition criticism that the departments under him was in a mess.

In a statement here, the Minister said cooperatives had mobilised additional deposits of over Rs.15,000 crore during the past 20 months and organised more than 10,000 cooperative markets besides reducing interest on farm loans. A sum of Rs.175 crore was spent in the coir sector, he said.

The Minister said that unlike the previous United Democratic Front government, the present Left Democratic Front government did not tolerate illegal actions by Devaswom Board members.

Mr. Sudhakaran said the Opposition leaders Ramesh Chennithala, G. Karthikeyan, M.M. Hassan, P.K. Kunhalikutty, M.V. Raghavan, R. Balakrishna Pillai and K.B. Ganesh Kumar had spoken in a threatening manner about his reaction to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s remarks on the Kerala government during her recent visit to the State. Such threats would not receive public support, he added.

BJP seeks probe

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State general secretary M.T. Ramesh demanded that an inquiry be ordered into the chairperson and the administrator of the Guruvayur Devaswom filing a controversial affidavit before court on Poonthanam and the Guruvaryur Sree Krishna temple.

The role of Mr. Sudhakaran should also be probed, the BJP State general secretary said.
