The panel will study environmental problems. KOCHI: The first meeting of the high-level technical committee on quarry safety that will draw up detailed guidelines for workers’ safety in stone quarries will be held on March 19. The government decided to set up the technical committee following the December 22 quarry accident near Perumbavoor that killed five people. Safety measures in quarries would be intensified, said K.L. Krishna Murthy, director of Mining and Geology. The seven-member committee, to be headed by the Principal Secretary in the Industries Department, will have members comprising senior officials in charge of mines, labour, safety and explosives in Central and State government departments. The committee will also study environmental problems caused by mines and quarries, the availability of m-sand at affordable price, and increasing government’s revenue from mines and quarries. Mr. Murthy said the government geologist at Kottayam had collected first-hand information about the accident at the quarry near Pambadi on Wednesday. From the initial observation, it seemed that the quarry owner’s negligence had led to the accident.
