MADURAI: Be it a major offence or a simple nuisance of miscreants, police intervention will soon require just a short messaging service (SMS). There is a dual assurance from the police — firm action and confidentiality of the informer. This system is set for launch in Madurai range comprising Madurai and Virudhunagar districts. According to Deputy Inspector General of Police K. Jayanth Murali, a software has been developed to handle SMS complaints. Any information that requires police presence can be sent in the form of SMS to ‘100.’ The text message will be given a unique identification number and forwarded to the local Sub-Inspector, Inspector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Superintendent of Police and the DIG. “We have a mechanism to check action taken on each SMS. The sender’s identity will be kept strictly confidential. His/her mobile number will be stored in the server and nobody will have access to it. This is an attempt to widen the police-public interface. Since almost everyone is carrying a mobile phone, we expect this concept to take off well,” Dr. Jayanth Murali told The Hindu on Thursday. Even if there is an eve-teasing menace at a place, the victim can send an SMS to ‘100’ and quick reaction teams positioned strategically will take prompt action. “Besides complaints, public can also seek clarifications on purchase of used vehicles and information on road blocks etc. The system will be introduced soon,” he added.
