NEW DELHI: The Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday decided to introduce the “Garbage on Wheels” scheme in 45 areas. In two zones, Shahdara (South) and Najafgarh, the scheme would be implemented by a private organisation chosen by the MCD through the due process of tendering. The idea behind the scheme is to eliminate the big dustbins and garbage collecting dumps referred to as “daloas” and in turn introduce a mechanism for door-to-door collection of garbage directly from households. This garbage would then be segregated and carried to the civic body’s landfill sites. According to the civic body, the tenders for the Shahdara and Najafgarh zones would be floated in about three weeks. Landfill sitesAccording to MCD Spokesperson Y. S. Mann, the meeting also approved appointment of a World Bank consultant for the civic body to undertake a study on landfill sites. “This study would find out the time taken for emission of methane gas in the landfill sites, its volume and the time taken for energy generation,” he added. MCD Engineer-in-Chief Ravi Das also announced that the civic body was acquiring a 34-acre-plot in Badarpur to build a sanitary landfill site. According to him, it would become operational by this year end.
