‘Ensure 100 days of work under NREGS’

Staff Reporter

Only 12 p.c. of workers were paid wages within three

days in January

ANANTAPUR: Collector N. Sridhar has directed officials implementing the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) to ensure at least 100 days of work is given to at least 1,500 wage-seekers in every mandal by March-end. The wage-seekers should also be paid wages for work done within three days of completion of work.

Speaking at a review meeting on the implementation of the scheme here on Thursday, he said now that the agriculture season was over there should not be any problem in mobilising the wage-seekers for the scheme. He instructed Mandal Parishad Development Officers and assistant project officers of District Water Management Authority, the implementing agency, to take the responsibility.

Works to be taken up

He told the officials to take up works like repairs to irrigation tanks, strengthening of tank bunds, de-siltation of tanks, revival of feeder and supply channels and their repairs to provide wage work to more number of wage-seekers at once. He also instructed them to make timely payment to the completed basement work of Indiramma houses and for pitting in horticulture schemes. The Collector told the officials to offer work to more than one member of a wage-seeking family, if necessary, to meet the target. The wages for works completed should be credited to the accounts of wage-seekers within three days of completion of the work, with the help of online account.

Only 12 per cent of wage-seekers who were engaged in NREGS in January were paid wages within three days of work completion, but efforts to streamline the process had improved to about 82 per cent in February so far. He said there was no dearth of funds and the officials could spend as much amount as possible by providing work.
