Letters to the Editor
The valiant old guard of Cuba, Fidel Castro, has graciously decided to step down from his official positions. The name of the tallest communist leader will get enshrined in history for standing up to the U.S. and guiding his country’s destiny for half-a-century with deft handling of state affairs. His indomitable courage in facing and countering the wrath of nine American Presidents is commendable. A. Ranganathan, Coimbatore Defying the “free market” capitalist forces for close to five decades and surviving innumerable assassination bids, Fidel Castro has made Cuba self-reliant, that is not dependent on dollars to boost its economy. Free education till university, and free healthcare for all are some social welfare measures that most of the developed countries can only dream of. Castro has proved beyond reasonable doubt that there is life beyond unbridled capitalism. Girish Prahalad, Bangalore With the resignation of Fidel Castro from Cuba’s presidency, an era has ended. He will be forever remembered as the one man who stood up to the bullying tactics of the U.S. and fought against the sanctions it sought to impose on Cuba. The fact that he was at the helm of affairs for close to 50 years bears testimony to his astute leadership and excellent people management skills. S. Sudhir Kumar, Hyderabad
