Congress backs gender budgeting demand
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Congress is backing the gender budgeting demand raised by eminent women at their meeting with Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday.
Led by Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar and Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare Renuka Chowdhury, the women urged him to give special attention to the impact of budget on women, Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said here on Wednesday.
She said the all-women delegation demanded loan waiver for widows of indebted farmers who had committed suicide and removal of anomalies in the insurance cover for women aged above 50.
Evaluation of credit programmes for women should not only be linked to immediate re-payment but also be done in terms of the impact on the livelihoods of women and acquisition of productive assets.
Subsidy sought
The delegation sought financial inclusion of all women who borrowed from commercial banks and cooperatives, not just from micro finance sources, so that poor women would not have to borrow from moneylenders at a high rate. It also sought subsidy in the premium for health insurance packages.
