More funds sought for overseas Indians’ welfare

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Ministry for Overseas Indian Affairs has sought more funds from the Finance Ministry in the budget to implement the assurances given by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh aimed at assisting the Indian workforce abroad.

A letter to Finance Minister P. Chidambaram by Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi pointed out that Dr. Singh had announced many initiatives to assist Indian workers abroad at this year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

A one-time grant of Rs.150 crore was necessary for setting up a fund and resource centre for those who send over $26 billion in remittances.

Mr. Ravi said that while the government provided several facilities and concessions to exporters, little had been done for the workers.

“I would urge a commitment of a similar, if not higher order, towards the welfare of overseas Indian workers,” Mr. Ravi said.
