U.N. official visits Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: Amid revelations by the International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC) that over 180 civilians have been killed and 250 injured in targeted and indiscriminate attacks in Sri Lanka since the beginning of 2008, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations Angela Kane is on a visit to the nation on a request from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to examine the world body’s work.

“The purpose of Ms. Kane’s visit is to focus on the relationship between the United Nations country team working in Sri Lanka, and the Government of Sri Lanka, so that the work of the United Nations agencies in Sri Lanka can be the most effective,” said Palitha Kohona, Foreign Secretary. She is expected to meet Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasingha and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.Meanwhile, the military claimed that in fierce fighting on Wednesday over 92 LTTE cadre were killed and scores injured. It said it lost three of its soldiers while 20 were injured. The Defence Ministry claimed that the LTTE made a desperate attempt to regain control over the Parappakandal area, on the same Mannar battlefront but failed miserably.
