NEW DELHI: Enhancing the compensation amount awarded to the family of a road accident victim who was knocked down by a light commercial vehicle and run over by a bus, the Delhi High Court has observed that the Blueline buses were the main culprits for the loss of hundreds of lives on the city roads every year. The victim was travelling on a two-wheeler at Rohini in North-West Delhi. The accident had occurred in 1999. “These killer Blueline buses have played havoc on Delhi roads and every year many precious lives are sacrificed under their wheels,” Justice Kailash Gambhir of the Court observed. Mr. Justice Gambhir also pulled up the government agencies concerned saying that “instead extending a helping hand to the victims, they create all sorts of problems to make their lives and those of their families miserable”. “It is a great irony in this country that insurance companies are prompt in settling claims of insured vehicles, but create all sorts of obstructions in settling claims of road accident victims,” Mr. Justice Gambhir further observed. The Court enhanced the compensation amount from Rs. 2.59 lakh to Rs. 4.61 lakh.
