East Godavari agency tense

B.V.S. Bhaskar

Rampachodavaram (East Godavari Dt): The agency area in East Godavari district is tense, particularly after a continuous ‘war’ between Maoists and the police in Chhattisgarh and Orissa. Top leaders of the State’s east region and Central committee reportedly visited the forest areas in the district like Y. Ramavaram, Maredumilli and Rajavommangi mandals and border mandal of Koyyuru.

According to sources close to Maoists, former secretary of AP State and Central committee member Ramakrishna alias ‘RK’, who led the delegation of Maoists in the talks with the Government in 2004, toured Koyyuru and Y. Ramavaram mandals last week. Two squads, one led by the east region secretary Jagadish and the other by Korukonda dalam commander Anil, are also said to have toured the interior Y. Ramavaram and Rajavommangi villages in the last four days.

Tip-off

Mr. Ramakrishna’s tour to Y. Ramavaram and the border village of Koyyuru about a month ago comes in the light of the spate of surrenders and encounters that had considerable impact on the Maoist strength. The police got a tip-off of the visit of a top leader to the area, but the information was a bit delayed and there was no certainty about who the top leader was. The police top brass deployed Greyhound parties from Vizag and tried to lay a trap for RK and his men but could not reach him in time. The visit was apparently aimed at intensifying the movement in Palakajeedi, Revulakota, Gangavaram, Teetukaralla on the other side of the district border and Chidikada, Jangalathota, Patakota and Gurthedu in East Godavari district. The leaders are reportedly making efforts to strengthen the party in these areas.

Police admit that the Maoists had significant presence in all these villages. . Maoists who were said to be receiving little support from the local tribes in Rajavommangi and Maredumilli mandals have deployed 100 to 200 Gutti Koyas from Chhattisgarh in east division to carry out activities.
