Puducherry
C. John Peter covered 5 km with his hands to create environmental awareness in Puducherry. PUDUCHERRY: Campaigning for social causes is not a new thing for 22-year-old C. John Peter. And, he does it differently each time – by setting new records. Overcoming barriers, including his physical disability, Mr. Peter, on Friday, set a new record to create environmental awareness among the public. Trained in yoga, Mr. Peter who suffered a polio attack at a young age used an asana ‘Uthitha Padmasanam’ to cover 5 km with his hands. By accomplishing this feat he aimed to highlight the importance of protecting the environment. “I have completed six records till date for various social causes. This time, I want to create awareness among people of the importance of maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings. We need a clean environment free of pollution,” he said. He had earlier campaigned for the eradication of polio, education for all, the welfare of disabled persons, and HIV/AIDS awareness. In 2002, he entered the Limca Book of Records for walking upside down 600 steps at the Indira Gandhi stadium to stress education for all. Apart from this, Mr. Peter has also walked upside down for 2 km and driven a motorcycle in the reverse direction for 35 km. Grabbing attention“By doing things differently I am able to turn the attention of people to the cause. Disabled persons should not feel inferior, and I want to be an example in society,” he said. Starting his campaign opposite Bharathidasan Women’s College, Mr. Peter covered areas including Ajantha Theatre, Raja Theatre, Nehru Street and Mission Street. The finishing point was near the Assembly. “I have completed a diploma in yoga. At present, I am training around 22 children in yoga. I am planning to pursue a degree in yoga,” Mr. Peter added. He had completed Standard XII from the Community College here. He wants the Government to pay attention to the needs of persons with disabilities. It is important that the Government takes into consideration their welfare, he said. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan flagged off the campaign, which was organised by the Puducherry Record Holders Association.
