NEW TECHNIQUE: Collector T.N. Venkatesh (right) inspecting a mechanised multi-purpose sickle at a conference in Karur on Friday. KARUR: The National Agriculture Development Programme will be implemented in the district from April, according to Collector T.N. Venkatesh. The programme will ensure that farmers gain access to modern technology, adequate marketing means and storage facilities in a single location, he said at the ‘Conference on Agriculture’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Friday. FundingThe programme, funded by the Central and State governments, was already being implemented in some districts and was set for expansion to all districts in the State. The plan was expected to increase not only productivity but also quality. Mr. Venkatesh hoped that with the implementation of the programme, farmers in the district would get a remunerative price for their produce besides ensuring that farm-related industries get a boost as regards supply of raw materials. Pointing out that sunflower was being cultivated on a large-scale in the district, the Collector urged entrepreneurs to start oil extraction and refining units. A huge quantum of drum stick was being harvested in the Aravakurichi region of the district but there was lack of cold storage facility, forcing growers to sell all their produce immediately. Hence, efforts should be taken to give value addition. The Collector called upon veterinarians, animal husbandry, dairy professionals and agriculture experts to introduce emerging technology for converting the vast tracts of land available in the district into fodder crop fields. That would ensure a hefty increase in milk production in Karur district, he added. Organic farmingAt the same time, Mr. Venkatesh called upon farmers to try out organic farming that would not only turn out to be environmentally sustainable but also lucrative for the producers. The governments were encouraging organic farm exports in a big way, he underlined. The State government was providing a lot of facilities for entrepreneurs to start industries in rural areas under the New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam. Under the scheme modern rice mills, mat weaving industries and such other ventures could be started here, he added. Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Karur, M. Sivakannan, Managing Director, Lakshmi Vilas Bank, V.S. Reddy, Professor and Head, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Farm Science Centre, R. Vijayaraghavan and others spoke on the occasion. An exhibition of modern farm implements was organised as part of the conference.
