GULBARGA: The Jewargi taluk unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) has decided to defy the party leadership’s decision not to have any understanding or alliance with the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the elections to the posts of president and vice-president of urban local bodies and share power with the BJP in Jewargi Town Panchayat. Kedarlingaiah Hiremath, senior leader of the party and Chairman of the Gulbarga District Cooperative Credit Bank, and Rudragowda Havalgi, president of the Jewargi Taluk Yuva Janata Dal (S), told presspersons here on Friday that the Janata Dal (S) had fought the town panchayat elections along with the BJP and the with that party would continue in the elections to the posts of president and vice-president of the panchayat also. He said preliminary discussions had been held between the leaders of both the parties in Jewargi and it had been agreed that the post of president would go to the Janata Dal (S) and that of vice-president to the BJP. In the 21-member panchayat, no party has majority. The Congress is the single largest party with nine members. The Janata Dal (S) has six members, BJP five and the BSP has one member. The Janata Dal (S)-BJP combine has a clear majority and the alliance also claims to have the support of the BSP member. The elections will be held on February 25.
