MUCCHANDI (MAHARASHTRA): This Kannada-speaking village in Maharashtra near the Karnataka border wore a festive look on Friday. The reason was the people of the village, including schoolchildren, had an opportunity to be with well-known Kannada writers and scholars. Moreover, it was a rare occasion where many Kannada books were distributed to them free of cost, thanks to the efforts by the Kannada Book Authority, Kannada Development Authority and the Akhila Karnataka Kendriya Kannada Kriya Samiti, a Dharwad-based linguistic organisation. Poet Chennaveera Kanavi, who inaugurated a function to distribute Kannada books on the premises of Mucchandi Mitra Mandali’s Kannada Medium Primary School here, said Kannada institutions and writers in Karnataka were committed to the development of Kannada in the border areas where Kannada-speaking people lived. Despite being located in not so congenial atmosphere, Kannadigas in other States preserved and promoted their language and culture. However, there was a need for more interactive programmes that helped in strengthening relations between Kannadigas in Karnataka and outside the State, he added. Siddalingaiah, president of the authority, said 20,000 Kannada books would be provided to 50 Kannada-medium schools in Jatt taluk. Gurulinga Kapse, former Chairman of the Kannada Sahitya Academy; Chandrakant Bellad, samiti president, and Mohan Nagammanavar, secretary of the samiti, spoke.
