KASARAGOD: Five months ago, when Anseer, a Class IV student of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Mogral, informed the officials of Indian Railways about a crack on the railway track, he did not think it was a major act of valour which could avert a possible accident. He did his duty as a responsible citizen. He did not tell even his friends or teachers about it. But nine-year-old Anseer, son of a poor fisherman who resides on Nanki beach here, became a hero of his teachers and friends at the school recently when the railways sent him a note of thanks along with a small cash reward. On September 18 morning, Anseer was on his way to school when he noticed a crack on the railway track at Nanki. He went to a public call booth and got the number of nearest railway station from the booth owner. Anseer made a call to the railway station and alerted the authorities about the crack. The railway authorities asked him for his address and the school where he studied. Later, the railways sent a team of mechanics to the spot and they found that the information given by the boy was right. They carried out repair works. According to the school authorities, they received a letter from the divisional manager, Indian Railways, Palakkad, recently mentioning about the incident and thanking the student. They also received a reward cheque of Rs. 500 to be handed over to Anseer. Anseer, however, is not elated. The boy says he did his duty. Of course, he is thankful to the railways for their acknowledgement.
