Fun and fitness: Collector Rajendra Ratnoo and Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar greet participants at the meet in Cuddalore on Friday. — CUDDALORE: Collector Rajendra Ratnoo inaugurated district-level competitions for the members of sports centres created under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam at Anna Stadium here on Friday. During 2006-2007, community sports centres were set up in 121 panchayats at the cost of Rs. 1 lakh each, and another 15 centres in panchayat high and higher secondary schools at the cost of Rs. 1.50 lakh each. In all, 136 centres had come up at the cost of Rs. 14.35 crore. Physical training teachers of the nearby schools were deployed to these centres to impart training to the local youths and students in various sports. To encourage them, competitions in events such as running, long jump, high jump, volleyball, basketball and shot put were conducted in stages - panchayat-level meet on February 9 and 10; block-level meet on February 13 and 14; and district-level on February 22 and 23. The events were held separately for boys and girls. Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar was also present.
