Tsunami relief: panel reviews fund use

Making an assessment: Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Rahman Khan, who heads a committee on MPs’ Local Development Fund utilisation, reviews tsunami relief works at Vypeen, near Kochi, on Friday.

KOCHI: The Rajya Sabha committee on MPs’ Local Development Fund utilisation reviewed the tsunami rehabilitation work carried out using the fund in Kerala.

At a meeting here with senior government officials and people’s representatives, the committee, headed by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K. Rahman Khan, called a time-bound approach to the schemes. He wanted officials to see that the projects were completed by June 30. These projects should be given priority, he said.

The committee said that cost over-run caused by delay in implementation could not be allowed at any cost.

The committee members visited an old-age home built with the fund at Edavanakkad on Vypeen island. They also visited Arattupuzha in Alappuzha. State Chief Secretary P.J. Thomas, Planning Secretary Tickaram Meena and Collectors of Ernakulam and Alappuzha were present at the meeting.
