3,000 houses for tsunami victims
|
RELIEF MEASURE: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal addressing a function at Karaikalmedu in Puducherry on Friday.
NAGAPATTINAM: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal on Friday inaugurated a multi-purpose shelter, built by the Rajiv Gandhi National Relief and Welfare Trust for Tsunami Victims for tsunami survivors at a cost of Rs.30 lakh, at Tarangampadi in the district.
Earlier, handing over a community hall and school building, built at a total cost of Rs.3 crore by the trust at Karaikalmedu near Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry, Mr. Jaiswal said about Rs.6 crore had been allocated by the trust to Karaikal district for rehabilitation works.
Lt. Governor of Puducherry Mukut Mithi, who presided over the function, said tsunami rehabilitation works were being carried out in full swing in the Union Territory.
Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said it had been decided to construct 3,000 permanent houses for tsunami-affected families in Karaikal district. Most of the houses had been completed and handed over to the beneficiaries. More rehabilitation works were being taken up and the Puducherry government was according priority for development of the region.
Motilal Vohra, Rajya Sabha MP and RGNRWT trustee, explained the trust’s activities particularly for the rehabilitation of tsunami victims.
Karaikal Collector N. Vasanthakumar and MP V. Narayanaswamy spoke.
At Tarangampadi, K.S. Kandasamy, District Revenue Officer, Nagapattinam, spoke.
