“Shortage of quality manpower will be a challenge”

MADURAI: By 2032, India will become one of the three largest economies of the world, posing a huge challenge to policy makers, who are facing shortage of quality manpower, Director (South India) of British Council, Chris Gibson, has said.

It was estimated that only 25 per cent of technical graduates and 10 per cent to 15 per cent of general college graduates were suitable for immediate employment.

Mr. Gibson was addressing the Business English Certificates (BEC) award ceremony at Thiagarajar College of Engineering here on Friday.

The course is conducted by Cambridge ESOL of the University of Cambridge, U.K.

“We are working to promote sustainable partnerships and one of the key areas is in English. It is our vision that every teacher and learner of English in India should have access to the best teaching and learning resources from the U.K.,” he said.

He said that education and English language were identified as two areas of focus by the Prime Ministers of the two countries, Manmohan Singh and Gordon Brown, when they met in New Delhi in January.

Largest outside

Spread over 13 locations, the operations of the British Council, he said, in India and Sri Lanka were its largest outside the U.K. Information Technology and IT-enabled services were not the only success stories of south India as car manufacturing was also poised to come up in a big way.

Hyundai, the Korean auto giant, was going to double its annual production to 6,00,000 units with the opening of a second factory.
