This Day That Age
Jubilant Egyptians and Syrians, in a plebiscite on February 21, overwhelmingly expressed their will to merge their hitherto independent countries into a United Arab Republic with President Nasser as its first head. To-day’s decision will unite 27 million people and create the biggest State in the Middle East. Groups of Egyptians hurried through Cairo streets gaily decorated with flags and triumphal arches to cast their votes. Huge red headlines in the Arabic Press called on them to vote “yes” for unity and Nasser.
