Letters to the Editor
The editorial “Balkan shadow” (Feb. 21) has laid bare the dangerous impact the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo and its quick recognition by the United States and major European countries will have on countries facing ethnic strife and insurgency. It is imperative for countries such as India and Sri Lanka to take lessons from the Balkan crisis from 1990, and strive to protect their integrity and sovereignty. Arulur N. Balasubramanian, Chennai The unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo is regrettable since all efforts at reaching a negotiated political settlement on its future status were not exhausted. Its action has set an unmanageable precedent in the conduct of international relations. The recognition of Kosovo by many members of the international community will encourage secessionist and separatist forces across the globe. The government of India was right in not endorsing Kosovo’s independence. Kuldeep Jain, Chennai
