Corrections and clarifications

  • The caption of a standalone AP photograph (February 22, 2008, page 1), captioned “Bang on target”, was: “Killer Mission: A missile being launched from a U.S. naval vessel on Thursday to blow up a non-functioning satellite approximately 247 kilometres over the Pacific Ocean. The mission was described as successful.” A New York Times report “Too early to say if fuel tank is destroyed, says U.S.” (International” page, February 22, 2008) said the Pentagon made the announcement “late on Wednesday”, leading to queries. A U.S. Department of Defense press release of February 20, 2008 (Wednesday) says: “… At approximately 10:26 p.m. EST today, a U.S. Navy AEGIS warship, the USS Lake Erie (CG-70), fired a single modified tactical Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) hitting the satellite approximately 247 km (133 nautical miles) over the Pacific Ocean as it travelled in space at more than 17,000 mph … Joint Space Operations Center technicians at the Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif, confirmed the satellite’s break up about 24 minutes later.”

The last sentence in the New York Times report was “The 5,000-pound satellite, roughly the size of a school bus, was managed went dead shortly after it was launched in December 2006.” It should have been “The 5,000-pound satellite, roughly the size of a school bus, was managed by the National Reconnaissance Office and went dead shortly after it was launched in December 2006.”

  • A report “Vote Left Front out of power, Sonia urges Tripura voters” (February 19, 2008) gave the expansion of the (party) INPT as the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra, while a PTI report “Centre to blame for Tripura’s lack of development: [Tripura Chief Minister] Manik Sarkar” (February 21, 2008) gave it as the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura. The INPT (Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra) came into being on February 3, 2002, as a result of a change in nomenclature of the TUJS (Tripura Upajati Juba Samity) at the State Conference of the party, held at the Campus Hall, Maharani Tulsibati Girls’ School, Agartala on February 2–3, 2002.

  • The eighth and ninth paragraphs in a report “Industry, a large number of apex chambers cautiously optimistic” “Run-up to Budget 2008-09 – Business” page, February 21, 2008) were: “India Inc is also optimistic about some forward movement towards transforming India into a common economic market by implementing General Sales Tax (GST) …

“As a step in this direction, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has sought reduction in the CST rate from 3 per cent to 2 per cent and integration of excise and service taxes with Central GST during 2008-09 ….”

GST is Goods and Service Tax, and not General Service Tax.

It will not be an integration of excise duty and service tax with sales tax but is proposed to be a replacement of excise duty and service tax as well as, if possible, Value Added Tax (VAT).
